It took years, even decades, but the victims of James LaMorte finally saw their former coach punished for sexual abuse.
LaMorte received the maximum prison sentence — 21 years — for molesting students at Venice High School, crimes he spent years hiding, then denying and, finally, Tuesday admitted having committed. But neither the sentence nor LaMorte’s statement of regret soothed the wounds of his victims, one of whom said: “I trusted you. I don’t trust anyone anymore. I’m ruined.” LaMorte received the maximum sentence after Circuit Judge Andrew Owens heard hours of testimony from three men, all former students, who wept as they recalled how LaMorte abused them.
