If you or I made a product claiming to either prevent or cure illness, and that product actually killed one single human being, we would have our business immediately shut down and probably face years in prison. AIDS Vaccine May Increase Risk of HIV

19 South Africans who received the vaccine during a clinical trial have contracted the virus

The frustrating saga of AIDS vaccines — 22 years of research, and not a single one yet works — has taken a sad turn: an experimental vaccine developed by Merck may leave people more vulnerable to HIV infection.

The Washington Post reports that 19 South Africans who received the vaccine during a clinical trial have contracted the virus, compared to 11 people who received a placebo. Investigators are contacting participants to let them know whether or not they received the vaccine.

The trials, which began in December 2004, were not limited to South Africa, but included 15 U.S. cities, along with sites in Peru, Brazil, Australia, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Those participants have not yet been told whether they received the vaccine; researchers will meet in November to decide whether the South African results are an aberration or indicative of a fundamental flaw in the vaccine.

It’s possible that the infections were purely coincidental. It’s also possible that the vaccine “could have caused immunological changes that made it easier for the virus to take hold during a later exposure.”

This is a major setback for not only for Merck’s vaccine, which was developed in conjunction with the NIH, but for the entire AIDS vaccine field. The Post notes that “researchers worldwide considered it the most promising candidate yet in a multibillion-dollar quest for an AIDS vaccine dating to the 1980s.”

Why have AIDS vaccines proved so difficult to develop? An article published several years ago in PLoS Medicine discusses the many reasons — the virus’s hardiness, its uncanny ability to adapt to not only drugs but immune responses, and our own incomplete understanding of it. But some people are able to resist infection despite repeated exposures; and some are able to control the virus spontaneously. A vaccine is possible. And someday we’ll find it.

Up to 140,000 heart attacks linked to Vioxx
Up to 140,000 extra heart attacks may have been caused in the US by the recently withdrawn drug Vioxx since its launch in 1999, suggests a new study. And millions of people may have been exposed unnecessarily to the risk of heart attack by taking Cox-2 inhibitor drugs, including Vioxx, when they did not need the medicines, according to a second study.

Vioxx Death Toll Mounts
The FDA now reportedly estimates that the total number of US Vioxx deaths may be between 89,000 and 140,000. This data has not yet been officially published by the federal government, though top FDA experts have publicly acknowledged these Vioxx deaths estimates. Worldwide Vioxx deaths are estimated to be between 150,000 and 200,000, though these estimates have not been confirmed officially. For years Merck had denied concerns that Vioxx posed a great threat to patient’s cardiovascular safety.

Watchdog Groups Say Death Toll From Vaccines Amounts to “Genocide”
Merck’s chief vaccine maker, Dr Maurice Hilleman, likewise testified that he “didn’t know we were importing AIDS virus at the time” the contaminated monkeys entered his primate containment and vaccine production facilities. According to the evidence Dr. Horowitz provided Dr. Satcher, contaminated monkeys and chimpanzees were used by the CDC, FDA, and Merck vaccine makers to develop the hepatitis B vaccine injected into gay men in New York City and Blacks in Central Africa in 1974. “This was perfectly timed for the emergence of HIV, related to a chimpanzee virus, four years later, ” Dr. Horowitz reported during a scientific session at the XI International Conference on AIDS. Records show the Merck pharmaceutical company received a major share of the Nazi “flight capital” at the close of World War II when its president, George W. Merck, was America’s biological weapons industry director. These facts were revealed by Norman Covert, Army public relations director at Fort Detrick in Frederick, MD, and veteran news correspondent Paul Manning in his book “Martin Bormann: Nazi in Exile” (Lyle Stuart, Inc, 1981).

US Death Toll Associated with HPV Vaccine Jumps to 11 with 3779 Adverse Reactions Reported
Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, yesterday released new documents obtained from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, detailing a total of as many as eleven deaths related to Merck’s HPV vaccine Gardasil. Those deaths resulted between June 8, 2006 – when the vaccine received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – and August 2007 when the latest data was available.
