It is simply amazing, and frankly very suspicious, that the organs have been held back from independent examination for a month and that they still have not been allowed to examine the room where Gotbaum died. This on top of the fact that the story about her somehow getting her handcuffs in front of her and strangling herself still stinks.

PHOENIX – An independent pathologist hired by relatives of a New York woman who died in police custody during an airport layover has been able to examine some key body parts, a lawyer for the family said Monday.
Pathologist Cyril Wecht had previously conducted an autopsy on Carol Anne Gotbaum but he didn’t have access to her brain, heart or neck muscles until last week, preventing him from doing a thorough investigation, said the attorney, Michael Manning.
Manning said the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office gave Wecht access to the body parts on Friday.
He said the neck muscles and the brain can help Wecht determine whether Gotbaum died from asphyxia, and that the brain and heart also are important to learn whether Gotbaum may have had a pre-existing condition that caused her death on Sept. 28.
“It’s not all that we need, but they’re certainly three important parts of her body that we needed to look at,” Manning said.
He said all Wecht needs now are tissue slides and photographs taken during a separate autopsy conducted by the medical examiner’s office, and that will be sufficient for Wecht’s investigation into Gotbaum’s death.
He said Wecht is working on his report at his Pittsburgh office and hopefully will be done by Dec. 1.
The medical examiner’s office is working on its own report, and has not yet released its findings.
Gotbaum, the stepdaughter-in-law of New York City Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, died at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport. She had been arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after she was kept off a connecting flight that was to bring her to Tucson, where she was to enter an alcohol treatment center.
Authorities have said that Gotbaum, who was handcuffed and shackled to a bench in an airport holding room, may have accidentally strangled herself. Police have said they followed procedures when dealing with her.
Gotbaum was married to Noah Gotbaum, son of retired labor leader Victor Gotbaum and stepson of Betsy Gotbaum. The couple lived in Manhattan with their three children.
Manning said another key to investigating Gotbaum’s death is seeing and photographing the room at the airport where she died.
He said he asked Phoenix police last week to get access to the room, and that he’s hoping he and an investigator will be allowed in Monday or Tuesday.
“We still can’t figure out how in the world this could have happened to her, even if she had been watched, even if she had been observed,” Manning said. “We need to see the bench, the shackles, and just get ourselves oriented to the room, because it just seems so improbable that she could get those cuffs up in front of her and somehow die in there.”
Carol Gotbaum was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and worked as a department store buyer in London before moving to New York with her husband.

If her family was really worried and cared about her, and she was as bad off as they are claiming, someone would have been with her the entire time. They are upset because it is their fault she is dead and want to blame someone else. Get over it!!!.

Oh yes, her family beamed themselves into the jail cell and killed her. Al-Qaeda then flew them out of the airport, all with the approval of George Bush and the Illuminati.
If you don’t get the sarcasm you are beyond help. If she was that bad off why was no one with her? Why was the airline not called to be on the look out for her. Isn’t it their job to look after an adult who chose the path she did? Remember, we are not suppose to look after ourselves or be responsible for our own actions. It is society’s job to do that and raise our children. Anything bad happens, It is Not my fault. Society failed.

First, you’re making an assumption about her health at the time of death.
Second you are making moral judgements about the deceased, as though she somehow had it commin.
Third you make it a callous case of “who cares? her family didn’t” when it is a matter of a human life we are talking about here.
And, nobody was legally obligated to lead her around. She was a grown woman with a problem and she was attempting to get it straightened out.
The whole purpose for this investigation is simply to find out or verify the actual cause of death rather than just taking the word of the cops. People want to know what happened. At least from society’s point of view, it’s called due diligence. Capiche?

I agree with Mike. The husband said she was suicidal, so why let a suicidal person out of your sight for even a moment? Has anyone considered that she purposefully strangled herself? You cannot place the responsibility of caring for a mentally unwell person into the hands of the airport security. I still question why the family and friends of this woman let her travel alone.

No nobdoy has considered the possibility that she strangled herself because it’s insane. Her hands were supposedly handcuffed behind her back, how do you strangle yourself from that position? The idea that somehow the husband should have accompained his wife to a female jail cell is insane. Why would the authorities allow that?

Two quick points. I was being facetious when I asked Mike if the family strangled her because he seemed to be blaming them. Of course, they didn’t enter the jail.
Second point is that the explanation that she strangled herself despite being handcuffed to a bench goes against common sense which is why the average person rebels against the notion, which is why there is a private investigation into the actual cause of death. Since the body has been gutted and separated into pieces, that will not be an easy feat now six or seven weeks after the fact.

It is impossible for a person to strangle himself. An attempt to strangle oneself would lead to unconsciousness long before death occurred. His grip would dramatically decrease to about the weight of gravity (if that much) when he becomes unconscious, because all activity and muscle tensions cease at that time. If he applies strong pressure to the jugular veins instead of the wind pipe, then his black-out could be immediate. In either of these cases, a black-out happens preventing further choking or self-injury long before death is possible. Speak to any martial arts expert to verify this.

Of course, anyone with common sense knows you can’t strangle yourself. However the “authorities” claim she was drugged up and drunk at the time implying that together with intoxication her breathing was cut off by the chain. That’s what they claim anyway. On top of this they are changing the language to “hanging” as though she was hanging from something. The only problem was, she was handcuffed to a bench. Interesting. It could have gone down like they say, but the other problem is they have never discussed in great detail how she actually managed to “hang” herself sitting on that bench. They also refuse to allow anyone to see the room where she died up to now. I mean come on. Something is not right with this picture.
