In the Stargate mythos, the Jaffa viewed liberation from dependence on their symbiotes as pivotal to their independence as a people. Star Trek had various symbiotic races--lifeform and mechanical. As long as it was voluntary, then viewed as part of a culture. The enforced transhumanism of the Borg was always portrayed as form of rape/conquest. Given the problems with the usual pcs and the like--why would I want anything implanted within me? Maybe we need an Olympic style ban on enhancements--if possible.
