LONDON (AFP) — Police investigating claims of abuse at a former children’s home on the Channel island of Jersey have found spots of blood in a cellar room, a spokeswoman said Friday.

Sniffer dogs detected two spots of blood in the large shallow concrete bath in a room underneath the Haut de la Garenne building, where a child’s skull was discovered on February 23, said the police spokesman.

Some 100 people have come forward claiming they were abused at the former home, while some 25 people are being investigated as suspects including former senior members of staff and a former politician.
Most of the alleged abuse is understood to have taken place in the 1970s and 80s.

A team of more than 25 investigators has excavated the underground chamber and police believe there could be three more in the building, which closed as a children’s home in 1986 and later turned into a youth hostel.

The horror of the abuse allegedly suffered was recounted in a letter to detectives from an unidentified person that came to light Friday.

“The thought of having to visit the ‘black area’ of my life and relive the events of my past, having to actually face them again and talk about them in details, filled me with fear and utter dismay,” it said.

“Whilst finishing up with you on the last day I did experience a period of an emotional breakdown, yet again. I can say now that a heavy weight has been lifted not only from my shoulders, but from my heart.

“There is light at the end of the tunnel and I am now walking towards it.”
Deputy police chief Lenny Harper said the letter brought home what the victims have had to go through. “This is an indication of the job that our officers are doing and how it is affecting those victims,” he said.

Police confirmed on Monday that they were investigating a scrawled message on a wall of the cellar of the building, where the message “I’ve been bad for years and years” was written on a wooden post.

Officers also added that disturbed earth in the Haut de la Garenne grounds could have been caused by the filming of former BBC police drama “Bergerac”, which used the former children’s home as a police station.
