Maoist cadres and riot police have been deployed at Nepal’s holiest Hindu temple to stop protesters getting violent at the government’s attempt to remove Indian priests. The decision has led to demonstrations by Hindu groups.

The Lord Pashupatinath temple is on the edge of Bagmati river in Kathmandu. The complex rises above the bank amid a mass of pagoda-style building. The temple moves to ancient rhythms. And one of its many traditions has been to recruit priests from far-away south India. But, for the first time, the south Indian priests have been replaced by local Nepali priests. It used to be a practice that the temple authorities would appoint the priests in conjunction with the king, and the King was always happy to maintain link with south India. The fiercely secular communists would have few qualms about dispensing with the services of the south Indian priests.

After the appointment of Nepali priests, many protesters in Pashupatinath shouted ‘Down with Maoists’, and ‘Scrap this decision’, as the two priests performed religious ceremonies. This decision must be scrapped immediately. The Maoists have appointed their own people as priests. Dozens of riot police and Maoist volunteers escorted the temple’s new Nepalese priests when they visited the holy sites around the temple complex, which dates from the third century BC. The Nepalese are worried that Pashupati complex is being used as a playground for politics. The Bhandaris, traditional temple caretakers, also protested against the decision of the Maoists.

Maoist cadres and riot police have been deployed at Nepal’s holiest Hindu temple to stop protesters getting violent at the government’s attempt to remove Indian priests. The decision led to demonstrations by Hindu groups. Nepal’s Supreme Court directed the temple authorities to clarify the controversy and not to let the newly appointed Nepali priests perform the rituals. Traditionally, the temple authorities would appoint the priests in conjunction with the king. The way Maoist government replaced the priests without fulfilling any formality has hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus.

After the formation of Maoist led-government in Nepal, the Maoist leaders are going to disturb and destroy the democratic norms and religious, cultural and traditional values of the country. Now, they are trying to take over the Pashupatinath temple. The Supreme Court has ordered the Trust to allow the three Indian priests to carry on with the rituals till its final verdict, the new priests have begun their work in violation of the order. Maoists and cadres of the Young Communist League (YCL) stormed the temple, broke the lock of southern gate, vandalised it and thrashed the Bhandaris. The daily worship was performed without following the traditional rituals. It is a blatant attack on the centuries-old tradition and it is against the Supreme Court order.

A prominent journalist Yuvraj Ghimire reported the Culture Minister Gopal Rai (Maoist central committee member) saying that the Government would not obey the Supreme Court order staying the appointment of priests.

In such a situation, King Gyanendra advised the Maoist led-government to keep the shrine out of dispute and not to tarnish the image of Nepal as a country where different religions co-existed in harmony down the ages.

Under the new rule, formulated after the installation of democracy, anybody whether Nepali or a foreign national, who is qualified and well versed with Hindu religion and is acquainted with the practices of Pashupatinath temple, can be a candidate for the post of the priest. Almost in 1343 AD during the regime of Lichchhavi, Muslim ruler Samsuddin, who hailed from Bengal, attacked Kathmandu and Pashupatinath temple. Now after 665 years, more than a hundred Maoists and cadres of YCL broke the lock of the Pashupatinath’s main shrine and took the newly appointed priest.

If Bhatta had voluntarily resigned new priests could have been appointed with the reason thereof citing the prevalent law regarding the worship and management of Pashupatinath. Since legendary period Newar Rajopadhya could also be appointed as Bhatta (priest). Rajopadhya should be traced from Bangemuda (Kathmandu) and Banepa (Kabre). In 1746 AD, Pratap Malla, the King of Kathmandu, appointed Gyanananda and Lambakarna as priests of Pashupatinath. They were tantrik (having mystic power). Till now, there are four Bhatta priests and 106 Newars as Bhandaris (store keepers and protectors). Bhandaris are chronologically important. Only those born in Devpatan, the Pashupati area, are entitled for worshiping Lord Pashupatinath.

The area of Pashupatinath imcompasses 264 hectare of land including 518 temples and monuments. We want to protect and safeguard this heritage. The Rajbhandaris must be reinstated. Maoist followed the villainous part as played by Samasuddin having a force of thirty one thousand Muslims plundering and vandalising the faith and trust of Hindus and Buddhists in Vikram Era 1400. The last Lichchhavi regime was very weak. There was a great chaos after the Muslim attack. To save the regime from such a dreadful situation Jayasthiti Malla, the Ksha King having cooperation and assistance from kings of Palpa, Kaski, Gorkha and Lamjung, attacked vigorously the Muslim army. Thirty thousand four hundred soldiers were killed and about six hundred fled away. It can be seen in Bhatapur Taleju temple. Then, Jayasthiti Malla ascended the throne of Kathmandu and reconstructed the temple and constructed the Rama temple across the Bagmati river and also established Kumbheshwar Mahadev and performed Kotihom. He also laid the strict rule regarding the entrance of Hindus and Buddhists only.

King Jyotirmalla writes in a stone lablet—‘About Pashupatinath in a 1465 Vs, Lord Pashupatinath having five mouth along with worshipable Bashuki the holy serpent.’ King Pratap Malla was famous in stone tablets. Prithvinarayan Shah the great, worshipped Lord Pashupatinath during his integration of Kingdom. It is stated in Lingua Bambshabali. Prithvinarayan Shah had got carved in Basantapur Place in 1826 Vs after victory over Kathmandu valley—‘Lord Pashupatinath and Goddess Guheshwari may bless Nepal for keeping sovereignty and stability along with Shah popular regime.’ Royal seals were also attached regarding the worship of Lord Pashupatinath by King Ranabahadur Shah, King Mahendra and King Birendra as well. Since 1979, UNESCO has kept this core area as a world heritage. It encompasses four hectare of land as a very sensitive area.

Let the Maoists-led government be away from imposing political interference over Hindus and Buddhists. The decision taken in contravention of all the rules and regulations regarding the worship be scraped immediately. This is the high time to be conscious and united on the part of Hindus, Buddhists as well as all patriotic Nepalese.

  1. I don’t understand what the government is doing.

  2. Dear editor,
I am very impressed for Organiger as well as that you have appreciated the greatness & reality of the Lord Pashupatinath in Nepal.

    Dear editor,
Now-a-days we Nepalese people are suffering by the traitors regime. The Maoist-led government is trying to take the country towards one-party dictatorship. This will only upset the political, economic, social and religious foundations of the country. Nepalese people will never accept it. The policies and directives of the Maoist-led government now are further vitiating the situation. They are going to destroy the identities & cultural assets of the country. So, we are very anxious about the bad situation of the country.

Hinduism, Monarchy and Nepali language are the symbols of national unity. But, it is the matter of worryness. It is now all clear that India wants to keep Nepal under its thumb by destroying the established norms and values, and culture and religion, by creating divisions and instigating anarchy by helping and provoking its agents and hangers-on. But I think, India also can’t secure following the sucidal path.
But why are the United Nations, America and other foreign powers despite knowing the identity and value of Nepal are supporting in ruining this country. They should know that if instability reigns in Nepal, it could be a bastion of terrorism posing threat to the whole world including India.

Nepal is the origin of Hindus & Buddhas. The Hindu religion is the world’s most liberal and tolerant religion. Nepal despite being a Hindu is the most liberal and tolerant non-secular country in the world. Hindu means ‘Hi’= Sun, ‘Indu’= moon. Nepalese national flag is also mentioned- Sun & Moon. So, why the Maoists are going to abolition the originatity of Nepal. Lord Pashupatinath & Shoyambhunath is the symbol of Hindu. A Nepali Scholar Mr. Dinbandhu Aryal expains– ‘Hindus are inclusive. ‘H’- stands for humanity, ‘I’- stands for individual righteousness , ‘N’-for nationalism, justice, economic freedom, ‘D’- for divine virtue and ‘U’-for universal peace and co-operation. The word Hindu is formed in the full sense.’
An analyst Stephen Knapp says- India is slowly losing the Vedic culture (Hinduism) is through the process of secular or Christian education. In public schools all vedic books have been removed from the curriculum. There are no possibilities to study the ancient Hindu literature or art in such institutions in India . The Hindu population is slowly forgetting theunique history and lofty culture of their homeland.’%th Feb. 2008- Peoples Review) >< In fact the Christian saints order to destroy the huts where they keep the idols of Hindu’s God & Goddess and to break the statues of Hindus idols into tiny pieces. That was there goal to destroy Hindu & Buddha culture and make the country a Christian nation. Now it is a high time, Nepal should be careful to save her indigenous culture.
We know, in Maldives and Saudi Arabia only Muslims can become citizens of those country. Even in Israel, except a few exceptions, only Jews can become its citizens. In Pakistan, a Hindu cannot vote for Muslim candidate. Why can’t Nepalese & Indians strayed leaders learn from other countries ? Out of 199 countries around the works, more than 100 are non-secular countries and of them more than 100 are Muslim and Christian non-secular countries. Despite knowing this fact it is intriguing on whose interest the so-called big parties declared Nepal a secular state. Because they had directly hurt the feeling of the majority of the Hindus in the country and more than 1 billion Hindus all over the world. If Israel is the only Jewish country in the world, Nepal also should remain the only Hindu country. Over 80% of Nepal’s 25 million people are Hindu, while in India an estimated 930 million of its population are followers of Hinduism. So, we request to all Nepalese & Indian party leaders & every nations not to think to minimize the reality of Hinduism as well as Pashupathinath, Shoyambhunath & Muktinath.

  3. Dirgha Raj Prasai,

Nepal is a varied, tolerant and liberal society with many identities that have learned to collaborate and live together in relative harmony for centuries. This has produced a lively culture with many forms of art, dance, music, religious expression which together makes it a place where individuality is honored and respected. This has also made it a fascinating destination for tourists to come and explore.

Then along comes Communism which is at its core a materialist, atheistic form of social engineering which devalues the individual and demands obedience and conformity to the State. Nepal is beset with an array of Communist parties such as UML which have laid the groundwork for the extremist Maoist takeover of Nepal. Their stated objective was always to set up a Maoist Republic, which in fact is a totalitarian dictatorship wherein all individual expression must be suppressed and where only authorized leaders may practice religion, politics and so on. Thus we see the latest attempts by the State to control religious practices.

But this is only the beginning and State interference in the private lives of individuals will only increase under Maoism/Communism. I myself fear another Pol Pot type of regime wherein the Maoist killing machine will cause rivers of blood to flow throughout the land turning Nepal, a place that could be a Himalayan paradise under the right circumstances, into a hellish place of torment and death. In truth, torment and death are the specialties of Maoism as proven by the Khmer Rouge and Mao himself who killed many millions with his executions, forced labor, famine and social experiments. This Mao is the god of the current rulers. Their religion is oppression. The results are still felt particularly in Tibet where freedom is a thing of the past and where jail, torture and death await any Tibetan who resists that evil power ruling over China.

Therefore, Nepalese must fight back now to reverse this trend and break the back of this ideology. They must band together in an urgent effort to warn their fellow citizens of the ultimate result of allowing this poison to infiltrate and rule over the society. They must educate themselves on the real history of Communism and Maoism in particular, on the cold brutality of it and reject this ideology outright as one would reject a terrible disease. It would be foolish to attempt an armed insurrection at this time, but Nepalese who love freedom should begin to fight using the weapon of truth until sufficient numbers reject Communism in all its forms and it is driven out of the country, not through force of violence, but through force of truth. A society built on truth can survive and thrive, but a society built on lies will only fall into chaos and darkness.

I have visited Nepal and have some Nepalese friends of various ethnic groups. They are some of the most sincere, decent and warm-hearted people one could ever hope to meet. Most Nepalese are very peaceful and kind. They would rather be working for a better life, having a good time with friends and family than to engage in violence. It is not in their nature to harm others, but if their minds are twisted by evil ideologies, they will lose their morals and become like a pack of wolves. This is the problem and it has already started. For the sake of my friends, and for the sake of all Nepalese, my heartfelt wish is that Nepal can avert the catastrophe that awaits if Maoism is allowed to proceed along its agenda for total domination. But as a precaution, ordinary Nepalese must prepare themselves for any eventuality and be ready to defend their communities, their families and their property from marauding Maoist thugs.

May Nepal awaken and take back control over its destiny towards that Himalayan paradise that it can become.

    Peace to Nepal,
